A late 1950s to early 1960s evening dress with popover top in that striking combination of blue and green that  was so trendy then. The brocade weave is a stylized hibiscus - it is intricate but not fussy. The scoop neck bodice is fitted with darts and has spaghetti straps. The set-in waist is accented with self fabric cording. The floor length skirt is deeply pleated at the waist, and has a bit of a sculptural effect due to the structured lining. The cropped popover is simply styled, lightly fitted with darts, but intended to stand away from the body. I could see wearing it as a going-out top with a pair of fitted pants.

FABRIC/COLORS: Brocade in vibrant shades of turquoise and emerald green. The bodice and popover are lined in olive drab acetate type fabric and the skirt is fully lined with pellon for structure. Per fiber burn test, the brocade is a synthetic blend, perhaps with rayon.

TAGS: Carol Brent

CLOSURES: A long metal zipper down the back of the dress with hooks & eyes at waist and top of neckline. The popover has a set of snaps at top and bottom in back.

CONDITION: On close inspection, I found a 1.5" fray at the hem near the left side seam - see closeup. I have hand stitched a small area of open seam on the left shoulder of the popover top. The bodice lining has the color variation that is frequently seen with unstable vintage dyes. No other issues noted.

This is a good book to read and understand how the European nations deployed their armies around the world to extract natural resources from other nations. Now, we have developing and underdeveloped nations.

Interesting book, dull period
Format: Paperback
As a Marxist historian, Hobsbawm sees the world at this time, as well as the modern world, as a playground for the forces of capitalism. He apologizes for taking a eurocentric approach to world history, while acknowledging that Europe largely determined the course of world events during this period. In spite of the title, there actually isn't much discussion of colonial empires; Hobsbawm seems more interested in how the Age of Empire affected the rulers more than the ruled. His Marxist sympathies are in evidence and at times make his conclusions a bit predictable, but some of his cultural critiques are quite brilliant. The chapter on the dilemmas posed by modern science is exceptional. Reading a book like this seems to me much more interesting than actually living in this period would have been.
