Tradescantia zebrina, commonly known as the inch plant or wandering jew, is a popular houseplant celebrated for its vibrant, variegated leaves featuring shades of green, purple, and silver. This fast-growing plant is native to Central America and Mexico and is cherished for its striking appearance and ease of care.

Care Requirements

Light Needs:
Tradescantia zebrina thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly in the morning or evening, but prolonged exposure to harsh midday sun may scorch its leaves. Optimal lighting ensures the plant maintains its colorful variegation.

Growth Characteristics

Tradescantia zebrina typically grows 12 to 24 inches long, developing long, trailing stems that look stunning in hanging baskets or on shelves. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and prevents legginess; pinching back the tips of the stems promotes branching.

Fertilization

During the growing season (spring and summer), it benefits from regular feeding with a diluted balanced fertilizer every 2-3 weeks to support lush foliage growth.

Propagation

This plant is easy to propagate through stem cuttings, which can root quickly in water or soil. Simply cut a few inches from a healthy stem and place it in water until roots develop before transferring it to soil.

Toxicity

Tradescantia zebrina is considered non-toxic to humans and pets, making it a safe choice for households with children or animals.

Tradescantia zebrina is an attractive and low-maintenance houseplant that adds color and vibrancy to any indoor space. With proper care regarding light, watering, and occasional pruning, it can thrive and become a delightful part of your plant collection.

Durable
Theme: Football, Size: Large
I have a German Shepherd and a pit mix and they played tug-of-war with this. I’ve had it for about six months and it’s still holding up.

Not for heavy chewers!
Theme: Animals, Size: Medium
Didn't hold up well - but realized I didn't read that it was for "light chewers." Otherwise, cute design.

Good for Chewers
Theme: Football, Size: Large
Dogs love it, they been chewing on it and it's like new. Also I put treats inside and they really like that. I have a small pit mix and a puppy shepherd husky mutt. They play tug of war with it and it's holding up really good.

Great inside toy
Theme: Football, Size: Large
Our Rottie loves these! I wanted something like the Jolly Ball but that is soft for inside the house. She's had a lot of fun with this, picking it up, tossing it, playing soccer, etc.

A BIG hit with my BIG dog!
Theme: Football, Size: Large
My Great Dane/Boxer mix LOVES this toy. She is over 100 lbs and very strong. She got a hold of my son's real football last year and after she made the initial holes and deflated it we just let her have it. She completely ripped it to shreds in about 7 months but had such a blast tossing it around and galloping around the yard with it, I knew I had to replace it with something of the same shape but hopefully more durable. This is it! She really adores this. We play catch and tug with it and it seems like it's going to last a really long time. The rubber is flexible but strong. I'll try to get a picture of her with it and load it. I highly recommend this toy. We ordered the Large size, by the way. :-) 2-6-2015 - Update: I am just now ordering a new one. For nearly 4 years, the old one has been kept outside in the rain, sun, snow, and ice. She still loves to grab it, shake it, throw it up in the air and play tug with whenever she's outside. The rubber is just now starting to crack so it's time for a new one.
