Introducing the string of tears, known as Senecio citriformis, which is a captivating succulent plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is known for its unique hanging/trailing growth habit and delicate, teardrop-shaped leaves that cascade down like a beautiful green waterfall. Native to South Africa, itmen is also known as Curio citriformis.

This succulent has slender, trailing stems that look great in a hanging pot, growing up to 3 feet long.

The leaves are small, plump, and elongated, resembling tiny teardrops or beads, that store water.

They have a vibrant green color with translucent windows that allow light to penetrate, giving them a unique appearance.

The string of tears flowers produces small, daisy-like blooms from late summer to early winter.

These flowers can vary in color from pale yellow to white and add an extra touch of beauty to the plant.

The string of tears propagation can be easily done through stem cuttings. Simply take a healthy stem cutting, remove the lower leaves, and allow it to be callous for a few days.

Then, place the cutting in well-draining soil, mist it lightly, and provide indirect light.

With time and proper Senecio care, the cutting will develop roots and establish itself as a new plant.

When and How to Water Your String of Tears Plant

Like other succulents, this plant prefers minimal watering. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, but don't let it become bone dry. A good rule of thumb is to water your Senecio plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Be cautious not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot or fungal infection.

Water your String of tears succulent every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season, and reduce watering to once every 4 to 6 weeks during winter dormancy.

In the spring and summer, prefers deep but infrequent watering. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly until excess drains from the pot. Since it stores moisture in its leaves, it is more tolerant of drought than overwatering.

In the fall and winter, reduce allow the soil to remain dry for longer periods and water sparingly. Overwatering during the cooler months can increase the risk of root rot, so it is best to err on the side of underwatering.

If the leaves start to appear shriveled or wrinkled, it's a sign that the plant needs more water. On the other hand, if the leaves become mushy or translucent, it could be a sign of excessive watering.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your String of Tears Succulent

When growing indoors, this lovely succulent thrives in bright, indirect light.

Place it near a window where it can receive at least 6-8 hours of bright, filtered sunlight throughout the day.

Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, as it can burn its delicate leaves.

If you notice the leaves stretching or leaning toward the light source, it's a sign that the plant needs bright sunlight. You can also rotate the pot from time to time to ensure even light distribution.

When growing outdoors, it enjoys warm and sunny conditions. Choose a spot that receives partial to full sunlight for at least 3-6 hours a day. Morning or late afternoon sun is usually ideal, as it's less intense than the midday sun. If you live in a particularly hot climate, it's a good idea to provide some partial shade during the hottest part of the day to prevent leaf burns.

Remember, when transitioning your succulent from indoors to outdoors, do it gradually to avoid shocking the plant. Start by placing it in a partial shade outdoors for a few hours each day, gradually increasing the exposure to sunlight over a couple of weeks.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The string of tears plant prefers sandy, well-drained soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. A succulent potting mix works well, as it helps prevent water from sitting around the roots.

Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive. As an okay alternative, you can create your own potting mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

When fertilizing your succulent, use a balanced fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 5-10-5 once a year to support healthy growth. Remember, it's always better to under-fertilize than to over-fertilize, as excessive nutrients can harm your Senecio plant.

Hardiness Zones & More

In the United States, the string of tears plant is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 10-11.

It generally prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F.

It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, but it's best to avoid extreme cold or frost, as it can damage the plant.

As for humidity, this succulent can tolerate average indoor humidity levels, so no need to worry too much about that.

If you live in a colder region, you may want to keep it as an indoor plant or provide protection during the winter months, such as bringing your string of tears plant indoors or using a frost cloth to shield it from frost.

How to Grow Indoors

The String of tears can adapt well to indoor environments when provided with the right light, soil, and watering conditions.

  1. Place the plant near a bright window where it can receive 6-8 hours of indirect light each day.
  2. Grow it in a container with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture from accumulating around the roots.
  3. Use a well-draining succulent potting mix to reduce the risk of root rot.
  4. Water only when the soil has dried out completely.
  5. Maintain indoor temperatures between 60°F and 80°F.
  6. Provide good air circulation around the plant to help keep the foliage healthy and dry.

Other Birds

According to to ASPCA, the Senecio citriformis is mildly toxic to pets and humans. It will be best to keep the plant out of reach of curious children, cats, and dogs.

How to Propagate Your String of Tears Succulent

You can propagate it through stem cuttings. Select a healthy stem and cut a section about 4 to 6 inches and allow the cutting to dry for 1-2 days to prevent rot. Once the cutting has callused, place it in a pot filled with a well-draining succulent mix.

Place the pot in a warm location with bright, indirect light and water lightly when the soil becomes dry. Avoid overwatering, as excessive moisture can cause the cutting to rot before roots develop.

One day of use, then it rubbed against my toes and caused cuts
Size: 9-9.5, Color: Black Denim Blue, Size: 9-9.5, Color: Black Denim Blue
I got these right before a trip to Costa Rica where we would be doing a lot of hiking, some tubing, and be in and out of water. They felt great when I first tried them on and I was optimistic. Our first day, we hiked a total of about 5 miles in the forest and along a river, with some swimming in pools throughout the hike. These weren't difficult trails, but a mix of gravel, rock, dirt, etc. The shoes felt fantastic and were comfortable all day. Later that evening, after they had mostly dried out, we did another mile or so to some other pools and I had no problem. During that hike I was so happy I was actually talking to my kids about what great things I was going to say in a review. The following day however, as soon as I put on the sandals, just walking to the hotel pool, the top of the shoe, just above my big toes, was bending and rubbing against my toes. It was very noticeable and I took them off and made sure there was no sand or anything else causing the irritation. I had no other choice that day and we ended up back on a similar trail, hiking a total of about 1.5 miles, with it rubbing against my toes the entire time. I tried both tightening and loosening the shoes and changing my stride to step more flat footed so they wouldn't bend at the back of my step, but that didn't help. Neither did getting them wet again, hoping to soften something up. By the time we were half way through that hike, there were visible raw spots on top of both my big toes. By the time we were done, they had become sores and very painful. The following day, we walked on the sidewalk to breakfast about three blocks away and it hurt bad enough that I found a store and bought a pair of flip-flops instead. I haven't worn the sandals since. I can't tell exactly what's going on inside the shoe, but I think the leathery part of the shoe is pushing down at the natural break in the toe area when I step, and the mesh is rubbing. Since I've worn them outside and been swimming in them, I can't return them, but they're basically useless after one good day.

Great headphones!
Color: Black
Great headphone! They work well and sound quality was pretty good. Definitely worth the money. I love that they’re not inserted into the ear. It allows me to hear things going on around me but not so much that I can’t hear my music. They’re pretty comfortable too! I have smaller ears and the earbuds that you put into your ear tend to hurt after some time. These typically don’t.

If you’re curious about open ear earphones give these a try
Color: Black, Color: Black
I don’t normally review but these are genuinely great quality, especially for the price! I was skeptical about open ear for sound quality/comfort to be honest and the first couple days I used them they were a but uncomfortable and my ears hurt after a while, but once you figure out how to fit them properly and get used to it they’re actually incredibly comfortable, so much that I often forget I have them on lol. The part that hooks on your ear is a soft bendy plastic, silicone-like so it’s pretty forgiving for different ear shapes. I love the dual connecting Bluetooth as well, super useful for switching between tasks on different devices. The sound quality is pretty on par with higher end options and it doesn’t really leak sound much either, even though it’s open ear which is great, also allows you to still hear your surroundings really well so good for commuting/out and about/office work. Great battery life and they charge quickly in the case, I work in video editing so use them pretty much all day and with the case they last several days before needing a recharge. I’ve had them for a couple months now I think and I’m really glad I went with this option. Absolutely the best option I’ve tried around this price point, anker products as a whole I’ve found are really great quality at a very reasonable price.

COMFORT KING 👑✨
Color: White
I struggle finding headsets that don't bother my ears OR cause headsets 🙈 others will just fall right out which gets super annoying... These on the other hand, are like air!! I genuinely cannot even tell I'm wearing them! The ear piece is adjustable for all (or most) ears! The sound quality is amazing while still being able to hear what's going on around me. They don't fall out, the adjustments help with that too! Even on the tightest setting, it's not uncomfortable, the silicone really feels like butter. My only semi-complaint is that the battery doesn't seem to last very long, but I've only used them out of the box 🙈 I'm gonna charge a full day and see how they do! Honestly not a major problem anyway because I only wear one for work, when one dies I just swap to the other. Connectivity is quick and easy! If you are picky about ear comfort, I promise you, these will not let you down!! ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE MONEY

Good value
Color: Black
These arrived a day early and I am currently wearing them as I write this. So far these aren't bad and I'm having a hard time complaining about what you get for the price. I got these for around $30 and the fact these have touch controls and an app you can use to adjust the EQ, the touch settings, and other things already makes them a good deal. The main reason I bought these is because I needed a pair of open earbuds for work so I can listen to music while still being able to hear what's going on around me. The sound quality isn't terrible but it isn't going to blow you away either. It's kind of like having 2 cheap but decent Bluetooth speakers strapped to your ears. Out of the box they might sound a tad muddy but I like using the hip hop or electronic EQ settings to make them sound more clear with added bass. They don't sound as good as in-ear earbuds (mainly because the bass isn't as rumbly) but they still sound really good, especially for the price. Once you change the EQ settings they have good clarity and you can hear the subtle nuances of each instrument. And although you can't really feel the rumble of the bass you can definitely hear it and most songs sound great on these in my opinion. I did notice that some songs with heavy sub bass sound kind of weird though. The touch controls work pretty well but hitting the right spot can be a little tricky especially when doing double taps. These also stay locked to your ears pretty well. You could headbang to some heavy metal music and these will not be sent into orbit. Some people say these are comfortable and you almost forget you're wearing them but I've had them on for about an hour and I can definitely still feel them. They aren't the most comfortable earbuds I've ever worn but they don't feel that bad either. I wore them at work most of the day and only my left ear started to feel slightly uncomfortable but I think that was just because the earbud needed to be adjusted a bit. The battery life is great and the case has fast charging which is convenient if you want to throw them in the case on your lunch break and get enough juice to last the rest of the day. The case is also smaller than I expected. I thought it would be bigger considering the size of the earbuds but it's literally the length of a toilet paper roll (i'm sick and have a roll laying on my bed next to the case) and it's about as wide as the upper part of your palm and as thick as a mcdonalds cheeseburger lol if you want a solid pair of open ear buds for work but aren't trying to spend a fortune these are a good option to consider. Just keep in mind that you aren't going to get super high quality studio level sound from these but that's not what they're made for anyway.
