Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek Variegata Half Moon’ is an exceptionally rare and spectacular form of the beloved Alocasia Frydek, prized by collectors for its dramatic half-moon variegation and velvety texture. A member of the Araceae family and native to the tropical rainforests of the Philippines, this variety is one of the most visually striking Alocasias ever cultivated.

The broad, arrow-shaped leaves feature a rich, deep green base with a soft velvety finish, dramatically contrasted by pure white or pale mint sectors that can cover half or more of each leaf — hence the name Half Moon. Prominent, silvery-white veins run through the foliage, creating a sculptural, almost glowing effect. Each leaf is entirely unique, with variegation patterns that range from bold blocks of white to delicate marbling and splashes.

Compact yet commanding, this variegated Frydek brings a sense of rare luxury and tropical elegance to any collection — a true centrepiece plant for enthusiasts of high-value aroids.

Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek Variegata Half Moon’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Strong light enhances variegation, but avoid direct sun, which can scorch pale areas. Insufficient light may cause the green portions to dominate or slow new growth.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3 cm feels dry. Ensure good drainage and avoid allowing the roots to sit in water. Reduce watering in winter when the plant’s growth naturally slows.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, 20–28°C. Avoid draughts and temperatures below 16°C.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–80%) to maintain leaf quality and prevent crisping on variegated sections. Mist regularly or use a humidifier for consistent moisture.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix — peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. This allows airflow around the roots while retaining enough moisture. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the mix and support healthy growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, especially as variegated leaves contain less chlorophyll and grow more slowly.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to maintain the plant’s appearance. Wipe leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to preserve their velvety texture and highlight the contrast in variegation.

Growth and Maturity

A moderately fast grower in warm, humid conditions, typically reaching 50–70 cm tall indoors. New leaves emerge on long, slender stems, unfurling to reveal entirely unique patterns of variegation.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity or excessive fertiliser.

  • Loss of variegation: Insufficient light.

  • Pests: Occasionally thrips, spider mites, or mealybugs — monitor regularly.

Background and Benefits

The Alocasia Frydek Variegata Half Moon is a rare mutation of the beloved Alocasia micholitziana, offering the same velvety, sculptural foliage with a breathtaking variegated twist. Its combination of deep green velvet and crisp white contrasts creates a living work of art. For collectors of rare and unusual tropicals, this plant represents one of the most desirable and photogenic Alocasia varieties available.

Best of Both Worlds: Plush + Squeaky Ball
Our boy loves plush toys and he loves squeaky balls, so combining the two makes this the perfect toy for him. He enjoys making the ball squeak and carrying it around by the soft plush heads, which is honestly adorable to watch. These toys work great for both our small boys and our big boy, making them a nice option for multi-dog homes. Fun, cute, and keeps everyone entertained — a big win in our house!

Nice toy for dogs but my dog didn't like it
Color: 3 Pack Spiky Balls
It appears quite appealing with its varied colors. My only concern is that my dog did not seem to enjoy it, as it frequently slipped from its mouth when attempting to carry it during play time. While it is soft, but it is not as pliable as some of the other squeaky toys my dog has owned. I think because of the spikes stlyle. This might be an excellent choice for highly active and young dogs. My dog is older and tends to be quite particular about toys.

Loves the ball inside the toy
My dogs love these toys, they especially like when they tear the toy open and they get the ball that’s inside the red sack. They carry the red Sox in that ball around for days before actually tearing the ball out of the sack. If you sold the balls inside the red Sacks, I would buy them. I don’t know why they love it so much but they do all three of my dogs. These are the best priced and best dog toys I have found.

Good news and bad news
Color: Multi-colored
My Westie LOVES these toys. She is obsessed. You need to know, going in, that the squeakers last about 15 minutes and then they are dead. Out of a dozen of these toys, it's happened every time. That's the bad news. The good news is that the toys are light weight and durable enough to endure tug of war. You can toss them in the house with little fear of breaking anything they might hit. The little rubber nubs seem to encourage chewing and our vet says that my dog has beautiful teeth because these toys act as a toothbrush for her. I would say most terriers are active and heavy chewers and so far none of these toys have been destroyed by her chewing. So if your dog will continue to play fetch even though the (beloved) squeaker is dead, these are great toys. Look for the multi packs like this one. The individually sold toys are much more expensive per unit than buying a bag of toys like this offering and the toys are exactly the same.
