Gazania Rigens New Day (syn. G. splendens), commonly known as treasure flower, is a rapidly growing ground cover featuring vibrant daisy-like blooms. Gazanias have water-retaining leaves and a deep root system that enables it to thrive in dry and arid environments.

While Gazanias are usually grown as an annual, it can be grown as a perennial in warmer areas of the country.

Gazanias grow best in light, sandy soil that drains well. They tolerate drought, but bloom better in slightly moist soil and in full sun.

The flowers close at night and during cloudy weather. Most Gazanias have a clumping habit, but some varieties have a trailing habit, making them ideal for containers or sloped surfaces.

HOW TO GROW GAZANIA FROM SEEDS:

Gazania plants are easy to grow from seeds.

  • Sow seeds directly into your flower garden after all risk of frost has past.
  • You can also start Gazania indoors, 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost.
  • Sow seed 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting formula. Firm lightly.
  • Keep the soil moist until established.
  • Seedlings emerge in 7-14 days at 68-85 °F.
  • When they emerge put them in a bright space, a sunny windowsill or beneath
  • fluorescent light on 16 hours/day and off 8 hours at night.
  • Transplant outdoors when they have two sets of true leaves.
  • Before planting in the garden, seedling plants need to be “hardened off”. Accustom young plants to outdoor conditions by moving them to a sheltered place outside for a week. Be sure to protect them from wind and hot sun at first. If frost threatens at night bring containers indoors, then take them out again in the morning.
  • After a few years, the plants may become crowded. Dig up and divide into clumps to re-plant.

CHOKING HAZARD
Flavor Name: Bone (S), Size: 6 Count (Pack of 1)
CHOKING HAZARD: I purchased these bones for my small Yorki.. He ate the first two without incident; however, on the third bone he unfortunately choked. As the bones wear down, they become extremely stringy, and those strands do not appear to be digestible. I had to rush my dog to the emergency room, which cost $700. Three days later, he became even sicker because he was unable to pass the remaining portion of the bone still in his stomach. I then had to take him to his regular veterinarian, where he was admitted overnight and diagnosed with pancreatitis and a severely irritated gastrointestinal tract. This entire ordeal cost me over $1,500 in addition to the initial $700 emergency visit. I am grateful that my dog is now alive and well, but these bones pose a serious choking hazard and do not digest properly. I strongly caution other pet owners, especially those with small dogs.
