The Iconic Heart-Shaped Succulent That Symbolizes Lasting Love

Hoya kerrii, commonly known as the Hoya Heart or Sweetheart Plant, is one of the most recognizable and giftable houseplants available. Its perfectly heart-shaped, thick succulent leaf makes it a natural symbol of love, friendship, and good fortune.

Often sold as a single rooted leaf in a small pot, this charming plant is both adorable and resilient. With proper care and patience, a mature Hoya kerrii can eventually develop into a vining plant with cascading heart-shaped leaves and clusters of fragrant, waxy pink flowers.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Instant Gift Appeal: A living heart that lasts far longer than cut flowers.
  • Low Maintenance: Thick succulent leaves store water.
  • Compact Size: Perfect for desks, nightstands, and small spaces.
  • Pet-Friendly: Non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Plant Profile

  • Botanical Name: Hoya kerrii
  • Common Names: Hoya Heart, Sweetheart Hoya, Lucky Heart Plant, Valentine’s Hoya
  • Family: Apocynaceae
  • Native Range: Southeast Asia
  • Growth Habit: Slow-growing succulent vine (when mature)

Ed’s Care Guide

Care Level: Easy

Light: Thrives in bright direct to bright indirect light. An east-, west-, or south-facing window is ideal. Insufficient light may slow growth.

Water: Water every 2–3 weeks, allowing soil to fully dry between waterings. Leaves may wrinkle slightly when thirsty.

Soil: Use a well-draining mix such as succulent soil blended with orchid bark for added aeration.

Humidity: Adapts well to average household humidity.

Temperature: 65–85°F. Avoid cold drafts below 55°F.

Feeding: Fertilize lightly during spring and summer to encourage growth.

Propagation: Stem cuttings with a node (single leaves without nodes will not vine).

Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets.

Single Leaf vs. Vining Plant

Most Hoya Hearts are sold as single rooted leaves. These can live happily for years in this form. However, only cuttings that include a stem node will eventually develop into a vining plant.

With time and proper care, mature Hoya kerrii vines can reach several feet in length and produce clusters of star-shaped, waxy pink flowers.

A Meaningful, Long-Lasting Gift

Unlike traditional floral arrangements, the Hoya Heart is a living keepsake that symbolizes enduring affection. Whether given for Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, or just because, it’s a timeless addition to any plant collection.

Fun for Pups and You Can Hide a Treat Inside!
These chew toys are fun for my pup! He especially loves that I can hide a treat inside, which keeps him interested and entertained. They’re a nice size for small dogs and puppies, and I also like the light colors because they’re easy to spot when they end up under the sofa because somehow they always do!

Cute toys but not for tough chewers. Might be too thick for my 6 lb girl
These are fun for the right dog, but not a good choice for all. They're a good size for medium dogs and some small dogs, but "small" is relative I guess and the size of this toy won't work for all small dogs. I definitely expected these to be smaller, though I measured and they are the size shown in the listing (for those in the US it's about 2 1/4" by 4 3/4"). I think one thing that surprised me is how tall (?) they are, or maybe thick? They show two measurements in the listing but not the other. That's the one that makes a big difference with small dogs, especially really small dogs like mine. I have a 6 lb Maltese with a teeny tiny mouth so I have to find toys that she can fit her teeny mouth around. She loves toys with nubbies and has other "spiky" toys like this, but so far hasn't been too interested and I wonder if it's because it's too thick. If she doesn't give them a try we have doggy friends who are big enough for them, more the 12-16 lb size. There was a bit of smell on them when I first opened the package, but after giving them a quick wash (which I do with all chew toys like this) the smell was completely gone. Whatever it was must have just been on the outside because it hasn't come back. I can't really say how durable these are, but I doubt they'd be good for tough chewers. They're not super soft but in the world of dog chewing they're medium at best. They're very cute and if you have a medium to soft chewer they could be a great addition to the toy basket. They also have a hole down the middle which could be filled with something to lick out, another way to keep them busy. Can't say any of this makes them worth the rather high price asked though.

Good for puppies!
I work with dog fosters and we recently got a new batch of puppies. These worked great for them, especially because they want to chew on everything!

Be careful, not for strong chewers
Sad to give a 1-star review on these bones, I had such high hopes. They’re a great size and design, and my dog was excited to get one when I gave it to her… until I happened to look down at her, having just given her the toy moments before, and she had chewed off a large chunk and was trying to ingest it! Fortunately I caught this and was able to get it out of her mouth before she swallowed it. My girl loves chewing on toys like this but I guess she’s too aggressive of a chewer for these(?) though she’s NEVER chewed a piece off of a toy before. Sadly this bone, and the remaining two in the bag, went in the trash.
