Sharktooth Orchid Cactus (Selenicereus chrysocardium)

Sharktooth Orchid Cactus brings dramatic tropical texture and a more collected look to indoor plant displays than most people expect from a cactus. Its broad, deeply lobed stems create instant movement and structure, making it especially useful for hanging baskets, elevated planters, and shelves where the growth can spill and layer naturally. This epiphytic cactus is a strong choice for bright indoor spaces that need a sculptural focal point without the rigid, spiny feel of desert types. It adds year-round interest with a relaxed trailing habit and a look that feels both unusual and easy to live with.

Distinctive Features

Sharktooth Orchid Cactus is prized for its flattened, spineless, pale to medium green stems with bold rounded lobes that give the plant its sharktooth or fern-like appearance. Unlike upright desert cacti, it is a tropical epiphyte with a trailing to arching habit and a softer overall presence. Mature plants may produce large, fragrant white flowers with golden centers, typically opening at night, though the unusual stem form is often the main reason it is grown. Over time, plants can become broad and full, with stems extending several feet in ideal conditions.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Place in bright indirect light or filtered light, with only gentle direct morning or late-day sun if available.
  • Soil: Grow in a loose, well-drained cactus or epiphytic mix that holds some moisture but never stays soggy.
  • Water: Water when the soil feels dry to slightly dry, allowing some drying between waterings but not the prolonged drought preferred by desert cacti.
  • Zones: Best grown indoors or in frost-free outdoor conditions, generally in USDA Zones 10 to 11 outdoors.
  • Habit: This is a trailing to arching tropical cactus with flattened, deeply lobed, spineless stems.
  • Notable Trait: Mature plants may produce large fragrant white flowers, often opening at night.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a hanging basket or elevated planter where the bold sharktooth stems can be fully appreciated.
  • Hanging Baskets: Display in hanging containers where the cascading habit can develop naturally and soften the surrounding space.
  • Containers: Plant in decorative pots where its sculptural form adds contrast to upright foliage plants and standard succulents.
  • Indoor Collections: Add to specialty houseplant collections where its unusual stem shape helps create a more distinctive display.
  • Patios and Porches: Move outdoors in warm weather to bright shaded patios or porches where it can enjoy humidity and seasonal fresh air.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering Routine: Allow the soil to dry partway before watering again, and avoid keeping the pot constantly wet or completely dry for long stretches.
  • Light Management: Keep in bright filtered light and protect from strong afternoon sun that can stress or scorch the stems.
  • Drainage: Use a pot with drainage and a loose mix so roots stay airy and excess moisture can escape easily.
  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is usually acceptable, but this plant often appreciates a bit more humidity than desert cacti.
  • Pruning: Trim stems lightly if needed to shape the plant or encourage a fuller, more balanced trailing habit.

Why Choose Sharktooth Orchid Cactus?

  • Distinctive Stem Shape: The deeply lobed stems give it a bold and memorable look that stands out in any indoor plant collection.
  • Trailing Habit: Its cascading growth adds movement and softness that many more rigid cacti and succulents do not provide.
  • Easy Indoor Fit: It adapts well to bright indoor conditions without needing the strongest direct sun in the house.
  • Low Maintenance: It is easy to care for when given good drainage and a simple moderate watering routine.
  • Collector Appeal: Its unusual form and bloom potential make it a rewarding choice for growers who want something beyond standard houseplants.

Sharktooth Orchid Cactus is an easy way to add movement, texture, and a more tropical cactus character to bright indoor spaces. Whether displayed in a hanging basket, styled on a shelf, or added to a specialty plant collection, it brings a memorable focal point with a softer and more sculptural presence.

Dogs love these!
Pros: keeps the dog entertained both solo and tug of war. Super entertaing to watch the dog beat itself half to death with a big grin on it face. Cons: dog will beat everything else to death too. You're basically giving your dog a wrecking ball. Similar to giving rubber nunchucks to a hyper 8yr old kid. If you dont own much nice stuff or you keep it all out of reach you should be fine.

Worst Toy Ever
Rope broke in one use of tug a war with my dog and I. It literally pulled apart, didn't even last 5 minutes. Not a strong toy at all.

Small
A little small but my dog loved them. Does not hold up to a shredder though. Perfect for typical toy lovers

None of the stuffing pulled out
I have 3 dogs. 1 is very gentle w/ stuffed toys. 1 is new to us and very anxious and kept stealing things like water bottles to gnaw on. And 1 destroys every stuffed toy we have ever brought into the house. We bought these for the anxious one. She was recently adopted and very people shy and afraid of the world around her. She doesn't know how to play with people and she's terrified if you try to throw a ball or if you squeak a squeaker, but we also needed something durable enough for her chewing that would be safe for her and could also withstand the toy destroyer possibly getting hold of it. They've been playing with these for a few months now and the most damage is that some of the rope necks are a bit frayed and a lot of the fuzz on the outside is gone, but none of them have been torn open. And the squeakers are in there in a way that it's hard to make them squeak if not doing so intentionally. The 1 dog can have plush toys again, the 1 dog can gnaw and chew to reduce her anxiety and the 3rd can chew and attack it without me having to clean up stuffing all the time
