Thaumatophyllum spruceanum, formerly known as Philodendron goeldii, is an extraordinary tropical species native to the rainforests of South America, particularly Brazil, French Guiana, and Peru. A member of the Araceae family, this plant is renowned for its striking spiral, whorled leaf arrangement and deeply lobed, star-shaped foliage — giving it an unmistakably sculptural appearance.

The leaves emerge from thick, upright stems in a radial pattern, creating a palm-like structure. Each glossy green leaf is divided into multiple long lobes, forming a dramatic wheel-like canopy. As the plant matures, the stem becomes more robust, and the whorls of leaves stack upward, giving Thaumatophyllum spruceanum an elegant, tree-like form.

Both tropical and architectural, this species is perfect as a statement plant in bright interiors, conservatories, or sheltered garden rooms, where its distinctive silhouette can truly shine.

Thaumatophyllum spruceanum – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. It tolerates moderate light but will produce stronger, more defined growth in higher light levels. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist during the growing season but never soggy. Reduce watering in winter. Like most aroids, this plant prefers slightly drier conditions between waterings rather than constant moisture.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, ideally 18–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 15°C.

  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (60–80%). Mist occasionally or use a humidifier to maintain lush, healthy foliage.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix – a combination of peat-free compost, orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir works well. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the mix and support growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser to promote strong leaf and stem growth. Pause feeding in winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base. Wipe leaves regularly with a damp cloth to keep them free of dust and to maintain their glossy appearance.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate to fast-growing self-heading plant that can reach 1–2 metres indoors. Its upright, palm-like habit and symmetrical whorled leaves give it an architectural, tropical look as it matures.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Leggy growth: Insufficient light.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs, thrips, or spider mites.

Background and Benefits

Once classified within the Philodendron genus, Thaumatophyllum spruceanum was reclassified due to its distinct growth pattern and tree-forming habit. Its name honours the Brazilian botanist João Barbosa Rodrigues and explorer Richard Spruce. Often described as a “palm-like philodendron,” this species adds structure, texture, and a truly tropical flair to interiors.

The best devotional ever!
Format: Paperback
I have read many devotionals through the years in conjunction with the Bible. This one is the best of all of them. I first heard of Lilias Trotter when I bought my granddaughter the children's book about her: Lily: The Girl Who Could See by Sally Oxley, Tim Ladwig with Miriam Huffman Rockness. While waiting for it to arrive, I watched the movie/documentary about Lilias Trotter's life Many Beautiful Things(2015)(You can view it free on YouTube). Miriam Huffman Rockness is integral to the film and all the research on the late artist and missionary's life. The Lord spoke an urgency and determination to Miriam's heart in preserving the legacy of Lilias Trotter. Without Mrs. Rockness, I believe Lilias Trotter's art, journals, and mission work would have lingered and disappeared into relative obscurity. God made Lilias Trotter special and she lived her life for His glory and service. After watching the film, I downloaded Lilias Trotter's Parables of the Cross on Kindle. I loved it, but the kindle version didn't contain the artwork she'd completed to go with this book. Her art and her words go hand-in-hand. It left me wanting something with both. I decided to order this devotional. This is a triple blessing! It has excerpts from Lilias' journals and writings plus her artwork at the start of each devotional plus a daily devotional inspired by these. Miriam Huffman Rockness brings application to today and ties it to her own life of service. I know Lilias and Miriam will have great talks in eternity. Thank goodness we still have Miriam. I will be reading more of the books the Lilias Trotter Legacy group makes available.

Only Excerpts and Art in Book From Lilias Trotter
Format: Paperback
Lilias Trotter is one of my favorite authors. It is my own fault that I didn't read the title careful enough to realize that it's the authors own personal thoughts about things Lilias said or painted that is the main content of the book. She's a good writer and I appreciate her personal reflections, but it's not what I assumed. The printing is well done and it's always a gift to see Lilias artwork

Beautiful gift book.
Format: Paperback
The quotes stimulate me to journal my own thoughts. I bought one for myself and one for a friend. It would make a nice pairing with her biography, “Until the Day Breaks”.
